It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Music Monday post, but I’m back! One of my goals for the rest of 2016, and moving into 2017, is to be more consistent with my blogging for all 12 of y’all that read this blog. Get ready for a lot of music and even more ranting!
So let’s get to the music.
This week two epic music worlds collide, Hamilton and Beyonce. In one of the greatest mashups I’ve ever heard, six beautiful people sing and rap tunes from Hamilton while dipping into Queen B’s discography to tell a piece of Alexander Hamilton’s story in a whole new way.
If you’re unfamiliar with Hamilton, Hamilton: An American Musical is a musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, with music, lyrics, and book by the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton is revolutionary in two ways. 1) Miranda gives this story a modern day hip-hip feel, making the story-telling that much more compelling. 2) The intentional decision to make the cast mostly people of color (POC) that are telling a story of a time when POC were not deemed as real people.
In similar Hamilton fashion, the six performers in this mashup are all people of color and they SLAY (someone give the brotha with the blonde hair my number).
I urge you to listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hamilton on Spotify (or anywhere you can get your hands on it). It is nothing short of genius. Also, be on the look out for the Hamilton Mixtape that will be released this Friday (December 2nd). The tracklist is full of the greats such as Chance The Rapper, Jill School, Andra Day, The Roots, John Legend, Common, Ingrid Mchaelson, Sia, Usher, and more!
