Music Monday – Singers That Can Actually Sing

Where do I even start with this one?

I think by now that everyone is well aware that I am a devoted Whitney Houston fan. She’s the greatest vocalist of all time as far as I’m concerned. There are very few people that can cover a Whitney Houston song, and do it well. Jazmine Sullivan is one of those people.

This week’s Music Monday is dedicated to Jazmine Sullivan’s cover of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing.

In January 2015, Vibe Magazine invited the Philadelphia native to one of their soulful “V Sessions” where Sullivan blessed us with a few songs from her most recent album, Reality Show, and this wonderful cover of I Have Nothing.

Jazmine Sullivan is a vocal powerhouse, and one of the best voices of our generation. Yeah, I said it. I said it and I’m not taking it back. Her voice is so smooth and soulful that it almost gives you chills. Especially when she sings in her low register, MY GOD! Chills!

What I love most about Jazmine Sullivan is she took this classic record and made it her own. She didn’t try to sound like Whitney, or anyone else.

Moreover, Jazmine has created her own lane in this industry. She has created her own success on her gift alone. Her pen and her voice have allowed her to prosper in this industry. She doesn’t have to take off her clothes and do all the stunts and tricks that her counterparts have to do in order to be noticed. No shade to them, but it’s so refreshing to have a real singer just SING and sing well!

I also respect the fact she has stayed true to R&B. So many of these singers have adopted new sounds, or change their sound completely to gain popularity or for more radio play. As an R&B and soul lover, I love and respect her so much for staying true to her gift.

I love Jazmine, I love her discography, I love this cover. I’m here for it all.
