The remarkably gifted British actress, singer, and songwriter, Cynthia Erivo, was born in South London to Nigerian parents on January 8, 1987.
She is a trained a professional, hailing from Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Erivo’s early work consist of roles on British television programs like as Chewing Gum and The Tunnel. She has stage experience in The Color Purple and Sister Act in the UK.
More recently, Erivo just wrapped her role of Celie of The Color Purple on Broadway. During her last show, she sang “I’m Here” for the last time on January 8, 2017, and when I say she sang her tail off I mean she SANG her tail completely OFF!
After Fantasia’s rendition of “I’m Here,” I never thought I’d enjoy the song the same way if anyone else sang it. But Cynthia Erivo has proven me wrong because this performance blew me away. Thankfully, someone recorded it and put it on Facebook so we could all enjoy it.
Cynthia Erivo has won three awards for her role has Celie. A Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, A Drama Desk Award for Outstand Actress in a Musical, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
Erivo also had an amazing album with Oliver Tompsett and Scott Alan that re-released last year that did not get enough love.
